Historic Home Signs

A great pleasure for history buffs touring the three villages of Essex is the abundance of signs that mark period homes with the year they were built and the name of their original owner.

Have you ever wondered about the provenance of your own home, or whether it might be eligible for one of these charming historic markers?

The Essex Historical Society is proud to offer the House History Sign program for period Essex houses in all three villages. This program is designed to enrich our understanding of the town’s past, provide insight into the growth of neighborhoods around family ties, and draw attention to the architectural styles that were prominent as the town developed.

Located along River Road in Essex, this historic home dates to 1790 and was originally the town’s first school building.

To date almost 300 EHS historic house signs have been issued. Signs, made locally by painter Andrew Vercillo, are available at a cost of $200 and come with a history of the home written by the late Town Historian, Donald Malcarne.

At its best, preservation engages the past in a conversation with the present over a mutual concern for the future.
